I wouldn't purposely supplement with it as it is the most abundant amino acid in the body. The benefits are gut health, immune health and it also can potentiate leucine. BUT, I wouldn't supplement with it.

Free weights are always great because they activate core and more muscles, etc. Machines allow you to overload a specific muscle. They both have a place. 

Muscle gain, no. Health....maybe. If from fruit and natural, I wouldn't worry. If in processed junk, I would explore new food options
